Abraham in God’s Story

Abraham in God’s Story: Understanding Abraham in the light of the Bible’s Great Story is a 6-week foundational course which follows on from the course, The Story of God and His World.

Many books and Bible studies have been written about Abraham. This one is different because it deliberately looks at the story of Abraham in the light of the overall story of the Bible. The emphasis is on seeing what God is doing in God’s Story and how people respond to God.

What can you expect from this course? You will read Bible passages about Abraham and learn how Abraham’s story can be understood by thinking about God’s Story, the overall story of the Bible. You will practice using guiding questions to discover how a passage fits in God’s Story. You may find it helpful to study our other course, The Story of God and His World, first. That course introduces the main sections in God’s Story. If you have not done that, do not worry. This course should still make sense.

The diagram highlights the third main part of God’s Story, which we have called God’s Promise. Abraham’s story comes in this section. It looks back to the parts that have come before, and forward to the parts which come afterwards.

It is a foundational course, useful for church members who want to grow in their faith, or for training church leaders who want to help others to understand the Bible. The guiding questions used in this course, together with the story framework, are helpful for further study of the Bible. The course is written so that people from diverse educational backgrounds can study together.

The course is designed for 6 meetings of 1 ½ hours each, with home study by all participants of approximately 1 – 2 hours per week. It is suggested that if learners have not previously studied “The Story of God and His World,” there be an additional meeting at the beginning. This means that you can go through the workbook Welcome and Introduction pages slowly so that learners can become familiar with God’s Story. The length of the workbook is 45 A4 printed pages. A TEEnet Certificate for “Abraham in God’s Story” is available on request.

For group facilitation, there is a facilitator’s guide to help the facilitator to lead groups through the course. Even if you have led this sort of course before, please do read through the guide as there may be some things that are different. The facilitator’s guide has been designed so that facilitators only need to work with one book. The guide contains some introductory information, the course facilitator’s notes including model answers and the entire learner’s workbook.
